Pirates of the Burning Sea Free Trials 3

New Year, New Focus (Sort of…) - by Havohej

Right, then, so when we incorporated The Defias Brotherhood within EVE-Online, we did so with the intention of pursuing careers in piracy. [DFIAS] has existed for about a month, now, and we’ve found that perhaps having such a strong PvP focus is more complicated and expensive than it first appeared, especially as we’re still in the growing stage. Add to that the fact that we are now a part of VENOM Alliance, and it takes away one of the pirate’s largest sources of income - the griefers’ wardec.
So we have decided that, while we will not discourage any of our pilots from engaging in activities CONCORD would frown upon individually or in gangs, we will not make corporate-sponsored ops out of such activities. We have also determined that, for the interest of self-reliance, it would be in our best interests to try to develop an industrial core within the corporation and grow that alongside the combat/PvP core.

It feels as though, seeing as we’re in a nullsec alliance with nullsec asteroid belts and moons and ice fields, we’re wasting half of our potential profit by not using these resources. Sure, ratting and salvaging battleships is great, but there’re literally billions of ISK that we’re ignoring, and it’s nearly untouched.
With enemy skirmishers penetrating our sovereign space and that of our neighbors in the region almost daily, flying Tech-2 nanoboats like Vagabonds, Curses, Ishtars and so forth, if we’re going to build a reputation within the alliance we need to be able to make a stronger showing of participation in defense ops as they arise. This would be made much easier if we had access to affordable vessels and equipment with which to fight. And in Omist, there is no better means of finding affordable products right now than by building it yourself. (In fact, there is a rather heated market battle being fought right now as the alliance tries to protect its resources from the manipulation of price gouging profiteers, both from without and within.)
So naturally, we’ve begun to investigate what it would cost us to raise a POS (Player-owned Station) in our alliance’s territory. Of course that means I have a number of factors to think of, such as:

  • The number of asteroid belts in a system
  • The system’s proximity to Headquarters
  • The system’s proximity to local ice belts
  • The system’s moons and what moon metals they might yield should we decide to have a moon miner and/or reactor….

Quite an involved thing this POS will be! But last night, in a major stroke of recruiting luck, [DFIAS] picked up two pilots of nearly identical experience - both of whom can fly not only battlecruisers, but also Retriever-class mining barges from Outer Ring Excavations!
I have an alt who is about 4 days away from being able to fly a Retriever, two of the other co-founders have the ability to fly Retrievers already, and these two pilots can fly them - that makes five barges we’d be able to field. But of course, the local rats would get upset with us. Still, that’s no problem seeing as how two of the other co-founders can also fly battlecruisers and one of our Lieutenants can as well. I know from personal experience that one Hurricane is more than enough to take down three npc rat battleships plus accompanying frigates, destroyers and cruisers.
As of this entry, most of our pilots have not yet returned from their holiday vacations, but I am confident that once they do, and once I get them all consolidated in one area and used to working more as a group than scattered individuals, and once I get them all down to Omist for jump clones, this corporation is in a very good position to grow exponentially stronger and more self-sufficient by virtue of our membership to the VENOM Alliance.
With our two new pilots having an interest in industrial operations as well as combat (though the two of them are strongly against piracy), and with our recent shift in focus away from piracy (though we ARE still a pvp-minded corporation within which pilots may do whatever they please on their own time… I still flip cans from time to time), I hope to recruit more indy-minded pilots - perhaps some inventors/engineers - to help us to build an industrial core within [DFIAS] even more efficiently. The more easily we can produce our own T1 ships, modules, rigs and ammo, the more easily we’ll eventually be able to produce our own T2 ships, modules, rigs and ammo and the more easily we’ll be able to field strong pvp gangs.
Only time will tell, but the future looks VERY promising.
